Rules for Social Media Marketing Success

>> Saturday, May 16, 2009

Social media marketing (SMM) is the latest buzzword to businesses and everybody wants to start immediately. But in our attempt to establish our business through social media, we forget the basic rules of social media websites.

I have tried to put together few rules for SMM that can help you to win over social users.

  • Forget “Me” and Follow the “You” approach: To be successful in social media marketing, think about what your users are interested in listening to and not about your priorities or interests.

  • Develop a Strategy: You need to develop a well-defined strategy of your goals, objectives and target market before take up SMM. Otherwise you could end up spending unlimited number of hours social sites without bearing any fruitful results. You can analyze and monitor relevant conversations that are taking place on forums or social sites to know about your competiton and market trends.

  • Engage Your Audience: How can you get other people interested in you? Certainly, through your messages, so participate in the communities, join in various discussions, leave nice or relevant comments on blogs, forums, or vote for submissions. Post interesting links, messages or posts that initiates a discussion among users and people actively respond to it.

  • Stop Self Promotion: When people use social networking websites, they are looking for real-life conversation and not self advertising. If your first message on social sites is “hey here is link to my website. Visit and know about our services” then probably most of the users block you. It can be really annoying for social media users to tolerate aimless self promotion

  • Share Knowledge: Always share your knowledge among your group, community or followers. Do not hesitate to share any informational content which you think would interest your audience, because it can win you loyal followers and links.

  • Value Quality more than Quantity: Mostly, new entrants in social media think that more the number of connections on social media sites, more the probability of getting business. But the fact is that success lies in the quality of interaction with the social users rather than quantity.

  • Take Feedback Constructively: Social media is a platform where you can interact directly with your customers, clients and prospects. They will be more than happy to give you feedback but your success depends upon how you accept that feedback. If you take that feedback to improve your business, then you can transform your biggest critics to your major brand promoters.

  • Be Nice and Friendly: You need to mind your manners when participating in social media or it can get you negative publicity. It is very important to make a good rapport among your community. Social networking is always about relationships on social media so be polite and courteous to others.
